What Is a Boiler?

Although the word “boiler” is often used to refer to the entire system, a boiler is actually a component of one type of heating system that utilizes steam to heat a home or commercial space. Rather than circulating heated air through ducts located throughout your home, a boiler-based heating system transfers heated water through pipes to various endpoints, typically radiators or baseboard heaters. These types of systems are frequently referred to as “radiant heat” systems.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Boiler Heating System?

Many older buildings in the St. Louis area are equipped with boilers and radiant heat systems. However, even if your home does not already have this type of system in place, there are many reasons to consider having a boiler installed.

Some of the main advantages boilers offer include:

  • Improved Energy Efficiency: Boilers offer greater energy efficiency than other types of heating systems, including forced air heaters, because water is generally a more efficient method of transferring heat. This means you can enjoy lower energy costs and reduced utility bills each month.
  • Increased Lifespan: Boilers tend to last longer than other types of heating systems, thanks to minimal moving parts and fewer mechanisms than furnaces, heat pumps, and other heaters. With fewer components, boilers undergo far less wear and tear, meaning they can last from 15 to 30 years.
  • Low Maintenance: Boilers also tend to be relatively low maintenance. While you should still schedule regular maintenance, this maintenance tends to be minimal, and you can enjoy a warm, comfortable home with a reduced risk of problems and emergency repairs.
  • Even Heating: Whereas heated air rises, meaning rooms are often heated unevenly with forced-air systems, boiler-based systems are known for their reliable, even distribution of heat throughout the home. In other words, a boiler can keep you and your family more comfortable.

At Vogel Heating & Cooling, we can help you determine if a boiler-based heating system is the right solution for your home comfort needs. If your existing boiler is acting up, we can inspect it for issues and, if necessary, conduct comprehensive boiler repairs and/or full system replacement.

Signs You Need Boiler Replacement

Although boilers are notable for their durability and longevity, with some systems providing effective heat for upwards of three decades, there will come a time when your boiler needs to be replaced.

Some of these signs include:

  • Your boiler is more than 15 or 20 years old
  • You’re experiencing frequent issues with your boiler
  • The cost of repairs exceeds the cost of replacement
  • The flame is yellow instead of blue
  • Your boiler has a substantial leak
  • There is noticeable corrosion, rust, and other damage
  • Your boiler has become less energy efficient
  • You want to increase your home’s energy efficiency
  • The boiler is making strange noises
  • Your home is not as comfortable as you’d like it to be

Our expertly trained and experienced technicians can come out to your residence for an onsite inspection. If we believe your boiler can be effectively repaired, we will recommend the proper service. If, however, we truly believe that your system should be replaced, we will let you know. We have a range of equipment options from our dealers and can help you find the right solution for your home or commercial property.

At Vogel Heating & Cooling, we have built our business on honesty, integrity, and the trust of our customers. We will never recommend a service, including boiler replacement, unless we truly believe you need it.
